Home Security Costs: Build a Three-Year DIY Budget

The purchase price is only part of a home security budget. Recording plans, monitoring, accessories, batteries, and replacements can change the total substantially. Compare systems over the same period and with the same features rather than comparing a starter kit with a complete setup.

Use this cost formula

Three-year total = hardware + accessories + installation help + 36 × monthly services + maintenance and replacement allowance.

Use current U.S. prices from the seller and provider, include applicable tax and shipping, and record the date of each quote. This worksheet is a budgeting method, not a current product price list.

Budget lineWhat to include
EquipmentHub, sensors, cameras, doorbells, locks, recorder
AccessoriesMounts, memory cards, chimes, bridges, cables, backup power
ServicesMonitoring, cloud recording, required app features
InstallationQualified electrical, cabling, or locksmith work where needed
MaintenanceBatteries, replacement storage, wear, and extra sensors

Compare equivalent features

Check how many cameras a plan covers, whether recording is event-based or continuous, how long clips are kept, and which detection features require payment. A free app does not necessarily include saved video. A free trial is not the same as an ongoing free plan.

Include cancellation and expansion

Read contract length, cancellation rules, financing terms, and the cost of adding another camera or monitored device. Consider whether existing devices will still be useful if you change providers. Proprietary sensors can make a cheap initial kit more expensive to replace later.

Run a simple scenario

For illustration only, if your chosen equipment and accessories total $450 and optional services cost $15 per month, the three-year subtotal is $990 before tax, shipping, installation, or maintenance. Replace both figures with current quotes for your actual setup. The example is arithmetic, not a market estimate.

Spend in phases

Start with the highest-priority entry points and add devices after testing. Keep an allowance for practical accessories instead of using the entire budget on cameras. A smaller system that you can maintain and respond to may be more useful than a larger one you cannot manage.

Choose a response plan with our monitoring comparison, then organize the equipment with the DIY checklist.
